Thursday, 26 May 2011

POLICE have revealed more details about the arrests of suspected illegal immigrants and drug dealers near an Oldbury school on Tuesday.

A man appeared in court yesterday accused of being involved in the production of cannabis, following the incident in Oldbury on Tuesday.

Police were called to assist Sandwell Council officers with a routine check on a house in Reservoir Road and discovered a cannabis factory.

Further inquiries led to the arrest of four men under the Immigration Act. They were also arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis after the plants were found growing inside the house.

A woman ran off and was also arrested on Brookfields Road following a brief chase on foot by police.

Inspector Ian Massey, responsible for neighbourhood policing in Oldbury, said: "People taking children to school at the nearby Moat Farm Junior School witnessed the officers pursuing the perso and the subsequent arrest of the woman near to the school gates.

"Officers have visited the school since to speak to staff and parents to explain the circumstances of the incident."

A 26-year-old man was charged with the offence of being concerned in the production of cannabis and has appeared before Warley Magistrates Court. The other three arrested men and the woman were released without charge.
